Breaking News: Withings Body Scan Smart Scale Redefines Home Health Monitoring

Withings today launched the Body Scan, a smart scale that goes far beyond measuring weight. The device now offers medical-grade ECG readings, arterial flexibility assessments, and nerve activity detection in the feet.

“This is not just a scale; it’s a comprehensive health hub for your bathroom,” said Dr. Lena Morrison, a cardiologist and health-tech analyst at Stanford Medical. “For the first time, consumers can track multiple vital signs at home with clinical-level accuracy.”

Background

The Withings Body Scan builds on the company’s legacy of smart scales but introduces three major health sensors. It uses a retractable handle with electrodes to capture a 30-second ECG to detect atrial fibrillation.

A separate segmental body composition analysis tracks fat and muscle distribution in arms, legs, and trunk. The scale also performs a pulse wave velocity test to measure arterial stiffness—a key marker for cardiovascular risk.

An additional sensor on the base checks nerve activity in the feet, which can help detect early signs of peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes.

ECG measurements are automatically synced to the Withings Health Mate app, where users can share reports with physicians. The scale also supports multi-user profiles for up to eight family members.

What This Means

The Body Scan positions itself as a preventive health tool, not just a fitness tracker. “By integrating ECG and nerve tests into a daily routine, users can catch silent conditions earlier,” notes Dr. Morrison.

For cardiologists, arterial flexibility data offers a window into vascular aging that was previously only available in clinical settings. Early warning signs of arrhythmia or stiff arteries could prompt lifestyle changes or medical intervention.

“This scale makes sophisticated health screening accessible—but it comes at a premium,” said consumer electronics analyst James Park. The device is expected to retail for around $300, significantly more than standard Wi-Fi scales.

Withings has not announced a release date, but pre-orders are rumored to begin in the coming weeks. The Body Scan will be available in the US, UK, and select European markets at launch.
