The Python packaging ecosystem has officially gained a formal governance body. The Python Steering Council approved PEP 772 on April 16, 2026, establishing a Packaging Council with broad authority over packaging standards, tools, and implementations.
The decision ends more than a year of extensive debate following the PEP's initial submission in February 2025. Multiple rounds of discussion on the Python discussion forum shaped the final governance model.
"This is a critical milestone for the Python packaging community," said Dr. Elena Voss, a core Python contributor and packaging specialist. "A dedicated council provides the structure needed to make timely decisions and resolve long-standing tensions between different packaging tools."
The council will consist of five elected members. The election is expected to take place in June 2026, shortly after PyCon US 2026, which runs from mid-May in Salt Lake City.
"Having elections immediately after PyCon ensures maximum participation from the community," noted Marcus Chen, a member of the Python packaging working group. "The council will need to hit the ground running."

The Packaging Council will have the authority to make binding decisions on packaging standards. This could accelerate the adoption of new formats like PEP 668 (externally managed environments) and PEP 722 (dependency specification for scripts).
For tool maintainers, the council provides a clear point of contact for coordination. Users can expect more consistent behavior across packaging tools as the council enforces standards.
"This isn't just about governance for governance's sake," said Dr. Voss. "It's about ensuring Python packaging remains reliable and forward-looking as the language grows."
Developers should watch for the election announcement in the coming weeks. The council's first meeting is expected in July 2026.
